Pon Power – Load Profile Analysis

July 1, 2021

Pon Power Netherlands is gathering data of load profiles on some of their ships. With this data, they can calculate the estimated power output of their engines. The data consists of the fuel consumption and engine rate, and there is a data point up to 5 times every second. When the captain of a ship changes speed or course, there are peaks within these time series of engine rate and fuel consumption. By combining these together we can see the efficiency of the engine.

When we find an engine with a very irregular pattern, or where the peak power usage only very rarely happens, it might be worth checking if a different (smaller) engine in combination with an electric engine might be worth it to reduce CO2 emissions. This is done by looking for the number, length, and intensity of these peaks. A lot of high peaks means there is often a high demand for power. When this only rarely happens, then engine could probably be smaller and the peaks could be supported with a hybrid engine setup.
